The Malabar parotta or the Kerala parotta is one of the most popular food items in the state of Kerala. Beyond all differences, Keralites love the parotta with pride.
Kerala parotta has a variety of combinations, the most famous (the most controversial for people in other parts of India) combination is, of course, parotta with beef fry/curry. It is the most popular combination though people also have parotta with chicken curry, vegetable stew, fish curry, even with simple sugar and many more side dishes.
In my life, I have had parotta with almost all these combinations though I had something unique with it in my school days – parotta with sambar π
There was a very small restaurant near my school, its name was Hotel Sreekrishna. Since it’s a tiny restaurant, it couldn’t accommodate many people at a time, so during the lunch break, students would run to the restaurant and stand in a queue to have the magical combination π
The restaurant only served this combo as lunch, no other food items at all. Their fresh crispy parotta and sambar was a heavenly experience!
I still remember in 2005, it cost Rs. 5.00 for two parottas, and sambar was complimentary π, they poured sambar all over your plate and you could ask for more. The sambar was quite special, I donβt know what the secret was, it was different from normal sambar and went well with parotta.
I’ve never had parotta with sambar before and after the Hotel Sreekrishna era π I know while I am writing this many of my schoolmates remember this experience, we all had great times in that tiny eatery.
Today I am grateful for the tasty memories of parotta with sambar from Hotel Sreekrishna, Silk Street, Calicut.
If you’ve had any weird combinations of parotta, you can share that as well.
