I was in Tokyo, Japan at the beginning of this year. I was busy in the daytime and in the evenings didn’t get much time to chill because almost every hotel, restaurant, and shop closes around 8:30-9 p.m. One night I was not feeling sleepy, it was around 2 a.m. I thought I’d go out for a walk.
I googled and found a restaurant famous for ramen. It was winter and ice cold, the restaurant was quite small, it accommodated only around 10-15 people around a U-shaped table. I entered and sat surrounded by people, all of them were Japanese, they were talking, laughing, celebrating something, I don’t know, I was not able to understand a single word of what they were saying, I just ordered ramen.
I found different varieties of dishes they were eating and one of the items looked like a starfish, very beautiful. I couldn’t resist asking the guy sitting to my left what it was, he placed a starfish on to my plate and ask me to eat. I felt a little embarrassed but I tasted it, it was very yummy and in his broken English he asked me, “Where are you from?” I said, “I am from India.”
He said something loudly to his friends, they were a team, they were speaking to each other, laughing, smiling. The cook who cooking and serving too also laughed and said something. What I saw next was that the cook cleaned everything in front of my part of the table, and started bringing in plates, different dishes…
Everyone in that team ordered their favourite dish and asked me to taste it. I think I must have tasted almost every dish in that restaurant at 2:30 a.m., they served me good drinks and took photos with me, they settled my bill too. They gave me some amazing memories, great tasting dishes and I have a lot of respect for the people of Japan.
I am talking about them because they served me great memories. I don’t know their names, I don’t know who they are, but their love, and their effort to make me feel included and feel good about their country was incomparable.
Today I am gratefully remembering each and every one of those people who gave me such a wonderful experience in Tokyo.
