Two days back I happened to notice a statement from an Indian actor (of Malayalam language movies) which haunted me!
He said: When we meet new people in life, we ask them “what do you do”. Mostly we ask this to decide (at least subconsciously) how much respect we should give to that person!
I never thought of the depth of this question we normally ask people, but what this actor stated was absolutely right.
When we meet a stranger, when we have no clue about his/her profession, regardless of the quality of that human being, or how great that person is with his/her values of life, or even how good that person was to us, when we come to know the profession of that person (what he/she makes for a living) we tend to judge that person (mostly unknowingly) and as a result of the judgment we made, we may tend to express different degrees of respect towards that person (knowingly or unknowingly).
This perspective has given me an opportunity to have deep thoughts about it and I’m sure this sense of awareness would make me a better human the next time I ask about the profession of another stranger.
My gratitude to the actor who shared this incomparable perspective!
