Today I happened to attend Holy Mass in a church here at the hill station. It was over an hour long. I was listening to the gentle, rather elderly, priest who was delivering the sermon, he was the one leading the ritual. He quoted something significant said by one of his predecessors.
He addressed the families of that particular area and told them to make sure that every day they helped or extended compassion to another human being…to do it as a daily ritual, and make it into something mandatory done at home.
He said, before you sleep every night, you may sleep with the sense of satisfaction and humility you acquire by helping or extending your compassion to a human being.
Implement this action “religiously”, more than other devotional activities, and it is the simplest but greatest thing we can do to the world as the children of the heaven.
In the whole hour and a half, this particular line really touched me deeply. It was so sweet, so kind, so humane…and so original!
Today I am grateful to that particular priest who shared this gem of thought with me and all the participants of that Holy Mass.
