It was in 2015 that I visited Hong Kong for the first time. My partner and I were there for discussions with manufacturing facilities, we also happened to be associated with one of the largest startup ecosystem enablers in Hong Kong.
When I visited the facility, the very first thing that struck my mind was that everything was created in a way that is user-friendly for differently abled people – from the road to the entrance, the elevators, the walls, everywhere there was an exclusive track for people who are differently abled.
Also, instructions were written on the walls in Braille. We saw that differently abled entrepreneurs were walking around and interacting in the facility with no trouble. And we also saw that one of the highest performing startups in the ecosystem was led by differently abled young people.
Recently, the government has been seeking perspectives and opinions from entrepreneurs in order to create new policies for entrepreneurs and the startup ecosystem. I was fortunate enough to provide some suggestions, and this particular observation was one of the primary talking points that I suggested for policy-making. My personal suggestion was the construction of infrastructure and facilities which are advantageous to differently abled people.
I think it’s high time for us to understand and practice that degree of inclusiveness in society and tap the potential of differently abled people.
Today I am gratefully remembering that particular facility in Hong Kong which truly inspired me to frame this perspective as a human being.
