Some people exhibit a tendency of overestimating their ability to control the events happening around them. The American psychologist Ellen Langer names this non-real feeling or state of mind “the illusion of control.”
From examinations, to driving to investments to gambling, in almost in every aspect of life some people tend to exhibit this behaviour which sometimes limits their ability to achieve what they could really have!
The illusion of control itself is responsible for optimism bias, unrealistic or comparative optimism where people tend to believe that they themselves are less likely to experience a negative event.
It’s better to know that there exists the illusion of control, being aware of it can only help us with decision-making processes. And I think that awareness would enhance our sense of discernment as well.
Today I’m extending my gratitude to Ellen Langer for this amazing perspective of the illusion of control.
