I did my graduation from a remote village named Kalayarkoil (64 km from Madurai, Tamil Nadu). Over 10 years back, I had an internet dongle but it hardly had a speed of 54 Kbps.
In those days I was doing extensive research on internet security and network vulnerabilities and badly needed a high speed internet connection. That’s how I reached Vasuki Computers, a local internet cafe in Kalayarkoil.
I would leave college by 4.00PM, reach there by 4.20, and spend my time doing my experiments. They had a pretty decent internet connection those days, I guess around 512 Kbps which was better than even my college.
Vasuki was run by two brothers and since I became a regular customer they became very close friends. Later I started spending a lot of time at the cafe, sometimes even more than what I spent in college.
As per the local police instructions they were bound to close the cafe by 9.30-10 PM because the place was notorious for local gangster’s frictions at night.
But I still remember the days I left the cafe at 2 AM. I was sure that the brothers were not aware or cared what exactly I was doing but they truly believed that I was doing something serious, out of passion. And they took the risk of keeping the cafe open just for me till midnight.
After all these years, we are now fortunate to have connectivity over 100 Mbps even at home but I still truly cherish the evenings and nights I spent at Vasuki Computers.
My stories in Kalayarkoil will always be incomplete without the Vasuki chapter. With lots of love and respect to the founders, today, I’m gratefully remembering the cafe.
