I happen to travel a lot for work and usually, if I feel comfortable in a particular hotel in a city I try to stay at the same place again. So in every city, in every hotel I stay at, I am quite familiar with the manager, waiters, room boys and staff.
There’s a hotel in Gurgaon where a room boy named Raman Naik assists me during the check-in process, whenever I need something from the pantry, provides room service, and so on. I often ask guys like these how much they earn and if they are able to survive on the money they make. Raman told me that the hotel provides him with food and accommodation and whatever he gets as salary he is able to send to his home to support his family. It’s a wonderful job, he told me.
One day I reached the hotel quite late and I hadn’t had my dinner and was hungry. I ordered food and when it came it was too much, enough for two or three people to have a full meal. I ate a little and placed the leftovers outside my room door. I was planning to go to sleep but felt very thirsty and needed a bottle of water, but I didn’t want to disturb Raman again so I went directly to the pantry. When I got there I noticed that Raman was eating the leftovers I had placed outside my room.
He asked me, “Sir, how can I help you?” I told him that I wanted water and he gave me a couple of bottles. I said, “Raman, you told me the hotel provides you with food.” He replied, “In this hotel, most customers don’t finish the food they are served, especially during dinner time, so the management has given us permission to take the leftovers if we like.” When he said this, I didn’t have much to say by way of reply, so I just took the bottles and went back to my room..
This experience left me disturbed for many days and made me realize I have so much to be thankful for. Today I’m expressing my gratitude for each meal I have eaten.
