This evening, I was in my car on my way back from Lulu Mall. When I reached a junction there was a traffic block in front of me, everybody blowing their horns and people shouting at something. I even thought it might be an accident, then I saw that it wasn’t.
I saw that a lady, maybe around 50 years old, was trying to make a U-turn with her car. From her gestures it was evident that she wasn’t an expert, and very new to driving. She was turning the ignition on but she was not able to press the clutch properly and the car kept turning off over and over again. People were shouting like a mob, there was hatred and anger glowing in their eyes. Suddenly an autorickshaw driver approached the lady, she got off, and he drove the car and parked it on the other side of the road. She walked to the car with immense shame and fear, and the mob was satisfied and dispersed.
It got me thinking that those of us who drive vehicles often can easily understand from the patterns of a vehicle whether the driver is an expert one or not. Once we realize that a person who is driving is not an expert, I don’t understand the point of blowing the horn, shouting and making that person afraid and guilty and fearful of driving!
I am sure that she must have felt very bad, nervous, and disappointed and perhaps she may never ever get back into the driving seat again. Can’t we be a bit more compassionate to our fellow beings? She was willing to try to learn something new, why can’t we appreciate her, why can’t we wait for one extra minute expressing solidarity with that brave woman who was trying to learn something new, what is the point in shouting at her, what is the point in laughing at her?
I do not understand this behaviour. We all learn driving and all skills in this manner only, many times our vehicles get stuck in traffic, and many people have waited for us to turn the ignition and let us take the vehicle and move ahead.
Today let’s remember them with great gratitude, let’s remember all those people who helped us to excel in the skills we have, those who patiently waited for us.
