day22 – Nurture

September 23, 2020August 8, 2021 by Amarnath

A few years back, I was invited to an engineering college in Tamil Nadu to deliver a session on the adventurous journey of entrepreneurship. There was a crowd of over 500 students, and they were very kind and patient enough to listen to my talk. I spoke for an hour or more, including the interactive session with them.

One of the key mantras I shared with them was, “Listen Your Heart” and make choices accordingly, since I truly believe that there is nobody who knows us better than our heart. The students were engaged, entertained and I hope inspired too. After the session, the management was happy, and the HOD was satisfied. While I was leaving the stage to go to the principal’s office, a faculty member gently approached me, and said, “Mr. Amarnath, ethum thappa ninachidathinge (please don’t feel bad), I have to tell you something.”

I was in the middle of a crowd, there were students, teachers, and many people around me. From his gesture, I understood that he wanted to talk to me personally. So I took him aside and asked, “What happened, sir?” and he said, “Amarnath, I am a member of the English faculty at this college.” I replied, “Okay.” He continued, “I liked your session very much, but If you say ‘listen To your heart,’ it would be better, more accurate, I thought I should say this to you.”

It was then I realized that though I knew I had to say “listen to your heart,” I had missed adding the “To” multiple times during my session. I held his hands, thanked him deeply and said, “Sir, thank you so much for pointing out the mistake I made.” Perhaps, that day, beyond everything, his genuine comment stole my heart.

In our life, there will be people who applaud or pretend to applaud us for whatever bullshit we do, we need to recognize them and understand them well, but we truly need people who want us to excel in our lives, who are genuinely brave enough to point out and correct our mistakes.

Today I wholeheartedly and gratefully remember the faculty member in that particular college who corrected me to “listen to my heart.”
