The book “Sapiens” written by Yuval Noah Harari is very popular but only recently did I get a chance to go through it. It is an account of our species and the journey of 300,000 years of evolution on this planet, from the rise of our ancient ancestors, to our current place in this modern technological age, how this species of hairless, tailless apes managed to completely dominate the entire planet.
Of all the chapters, there was a chapter that was very interesting, it said that mankind has never been more peaceful than in our globalized times. After the end of World War II, since 1945, no recognized, legitimate independent country has been conquered and eliminated by another country, it is a clear example of the strong interest and will of the leaders of the Americas, Europe, and Asia to maintain world peace. The 20th and the 21st centuries have been the most peaceful in the entire history of mankind.
There is an estimate saying that before the agricultural revolution 30 to 40% of all adult males were victims of murder or massacre. When we compare this number with the current world population it is less than 1% of adult men who die from violence.
From this, we can see how far we have come. People complain about society, its structure and hierarchy, but ultimately those systems were created gradually for the better functioning of people, societies, and economies which brought about the world which we are experiencing today. In short, we live in the most peaceful times when compared with our ancestors of 100 to 300 thousand years back.
Let’s enjoy the peace and let’s keep in mind that we have a responsibility to maintain this peace and today let’s be grateful to the people who have genuinely dedicated their lives to maintain world peace…
