This happened during the last semester of Engineering while I was in college. I went to meet my friend who lived near me and saw that he was well dressed, executive style, groomed well and sitting near his table in his room. His mobile phone was on the table and he was watching the phone like he was expecting something. I asked, “Dude, see it’s study leave no, we don’t have class, why are you in formals and what are you doing here?”
He said, “Bro, I have an interview today.” I asked, “Where is it in Madurai?” He said, “No, bro it’s a telephonic interview.” I laughed at him and said, “You fool, why are you dressed like this for a telephonic interview? Just pick the call and speak, man, nobody is going to see you.” I made fun of him.
He didn’t tell me what he was feeling or what made him wear that attire, normally he would quarrel with me or make fun of me back, but he didn’t say anything. As I was leaving the room I saw something in his eyes that said, “Man, I’m doing something right,” but I just ignored it.
After 9 years, during this COVID19 lockdown, I happened to see a video in which a professor at Stanford University was talking about how to be more productive during COVID19 days while working from home. The number one tip he gave was, “You should create a mental image, a sense of professionalism by wearing the same attire you wear in the office.” The professor said that you wear the exact formals, apply the same perfume you use, to give your subconscious mind the feeling that you are ready and you are doing your job, create the environment which would psychologically help you improve your productivity.
When I heard this my mind did fly back 9 years! Some people have strong convictions like that, we may feel it’s foolish but there’s magic inside them and we may realize it only after decades.
So, this was a great lesson for me and today I am gratefully remembering that friend of mine who appeared for the telephonic interview dressed formally in his hostel room.
