The movie Troy is among my all-time favourites. It is based on Homer’s great poems the Iliad and the Odyssey. It is an account of the Trojan War between the Greeks and the Trojans.
One of the characters in the epic, Nestor says, “This is the greatest war the world has ever seen and we need the greatest warrior,” and that’s how he advises the Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks, to bring Achilles, the greatest warrior of the time, into his army. The rest of the story is the conflict between Achilles of Greece and Hector of Troy against the backdrop of the war, but there is a silent witness to the whole scenario, Odysseus. Odysseus is the kingmaker who makes things happen. The story is told through his eyes.
I happened to watch that the movie Troy yesterday after a long time and I felt I should quote Odysseus’ words after the war when they have destroyed Troy and are burning their dead:
“Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so, we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?”
I love these lines and am deeply affected by them!
Let us also try to make our actions echo across centuries, and let people wonder how bravely we fought and how fiercely we loved.
Today I am gratefully remembering the character of Odysseus who is very close to my heart!
