day348 – How safe is flying?

August 15, 2021August 15, 2021 by Amarnath

Since the first time I flew in an aircraft, on every take off and landing – every bit of turbulence I experience it in the air, I am always a little tense and afraid, if something bad happens to the aircraft, what will I do. I always pray for safe journeys.

Today, I was reading a chapter written by Prof Vaclav Smil titled “How safe is flying” and the numbers he shared were so relieving and hopeful for flying!

Among many of his analysis, one simple perspective is this, based on the data he gathered from global aviation accidents: In the year 2017 only, globally, 4.1 billion people travelled 7.69 trillion passenger-kilometres with only 50 deaths on the flight.

Which means that the average chance for an accident while flying is 1/1000th of the risk of simply being alive!

My gratitude to Prof Vaclav Smil for this amazing write-up and the research he has done.

Let’s be more peaceful while we board the next flight 🙂
