day249 – Empty pot

May 8, 2021July 29, 2021 by Amarnath

I still remember an old Zen story. There was a Zen master who admitted only one new disciple every ten years. Once the time for new admissions came he asked the candidates to bring an object which would completely represent a student.

From the thousands, he admitted only one young man who carried an empty pot!

Being a disciple means that someone completely surrenders to the master for wisdom to be received from him.
The mindset of the disciple should be like an empty pot without any prejudices, without any preloaded knowledge but true emptiness.

That emptiness can only bring wisdom to our heart.

So whenever we wear the shoes of a disciple, empty our minds and receive ideas and perceptions from the master like an empty pot because if the pot is not empty the wisdom poured in by the master would simply spill out.

Today I’m extending my gratitude to this humble Zen story.
