There is a spinach seller near my apartment, every evening around 4 p.m. you can see her, at the same location, same junction with bunches of spinach.
I happened to talk to her and her name is Nani Amma. She is 78 years old and she has been doing the same spinach business for many decades. She has children and grandchildren but she told me that except for Sundays it has become an integral part of her routine – the cultivation, and then the selling of spinach at the same location in the evenings.
She said that her children and grandchildren told her there was no need for her to keep doing it. But she finds joy in working at this age and she feels contented making a revenue out of the business for herself.
I personally felt a great deal of respect for this lady because I know people who are finding ways to retire in their 30s and 40s and 50s. She is enjoying life where she has integrated her profession as part of life and, in her words, she wants to do it till her last breath.
Today I felt I should extend my gratitude to Nani Amma for her exemplary professionalism and passion to work and be independent.
