After almost a year, I visited a beach in the morning, it was comparatively calm and empty.
Some people were doing their morning exercises and jogging near the pavements, the municipal workers were also around doing their regular morning cleaning.
Something I noticed predominantly in their waste collection bags were the many disposable face masks. I talked to one of the cleaning women out of curiosity and she said that daily tens of kilograms of medical waste related to COVID-19 protection were being collected and processed by them every day in their area. This seems to me a very serious number and issue.
According to the UNCTAD report, the sales of face masks have jumped from 800 million dollars to 166 billion dollars in the last year.
Every human being in this world is using a face mask, and let’s be grateful to the people who invented this simple but effective solution to prevent the pandemic. However, let’s make sure that we are using reusable face masks, preferably made of cloth, which are more planet-friendly…
