I was having a discussion with a friend of mine who has published a book on Amazon which has won the bestselling title in certain categories online.
He is one of the voracious readers in my friend circle and was so excited to talk about the printing and publishing revolution that’s been happening over the last 10 years, how difficult it was for a person to do that, and how technology and independent publishers have now disrupted the way it has been done all these years.
After the conversation I thought of Johannes Gutenberg, whom we have learnt about in school, the inventor of the mechanical printing technology.
In fact, his work kickstarted the printing revolution in the world. About 600 years back his invention played a key role in the development of the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution and therefore the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses.
All these things happened just because of a goldsmith’s wild idea which drove the world into producing crazy readers and writers.
We are living in the 21st century and experiencing another leap in an innovation which had the power to shake empires and redefine the power and politics of entertainment and civilization.
Today I am gratefully remembering Gutenberg for his incredible innovation.
