Just before the lockdown, I was flying from Mumbai to Bangalore, I saw the cabin crew serve meals to passengers. The meal was included in my ticket, so I was waiting for my turn. I overheard the cabin crew say the options were vegetable pulao and roti and chicken curry. In my mind, I decided that I’d pick roti and chicken curry.
When the cabin crew reached me she gave me the pulao and I asked her, “I heard you have chicken curry and roti, could you serve that?” She said, “Sir, our non-vegetarian option is over, only the veg pulao is available.” I asked, “Could you check with your colleague?” because another crew member had another pantry wagon. She checked with her colleague and told me no non-vegetarian meal was available. I said, “Ok, fine, I’m not that hungry, I’ll take some water.” I really wasn’t feeling like having vegetable pulao. She served meals to the rest in the passengers, and after 15 minutes came to me and give me the meal I’d wanted. I was surprised.
As I was getting off the flight in Bangalore, the crew member was waiting near the exit and out of curiosity I asked her, “You told me there was no non-vegetarian meal available, how did you get me one?” She said, “Sir, hope you enjoyed the meal.” I told her I did. She smiled and said, “Sir, actually the cabin crew has a meal allocation and I opted for non-veg, so it was my meal that I gave to you.”
This incident, even though it was a very small, little gesture, touched me deeply.
Today I happened to be back in Mumbai and I remembered my experience on a flight the last time I was here and today I am gratefully remembering the cabin crew member who gave her meal to me.
