I had a discussion with a friend of mine who is a journalist, a person who has been working with a couple of media houses for the last 20 years. Three or four years back he’d said he’s planning to quit and start doing something of his own. Finally, he did it in 2020 and set up a news portal. I asked him, “Brother, there are thousands of news portals, even regional ones, so what is the USP of your portal?”
He paused for a while and told me, “Amar, we are going to start a portal with positive news and positive reporting.” He told me that there were a lot of good things happening in the world, but the sellability of good news is much lower than the sellability of bad or negative news. So our social media platforms, news portals, and media houses are overflowing with negativity, and that is the reason why he was planning to start a positive media platform. I felt his take on this was a genuine initiative, and we discussed a lot of things, it was an insightful evening for me.
He shared a lot of surprising facts about the way reporting happened nowadays, especially the drastic changes that have happened in the last 5-6 years, and how media houses are polarizing and manipulating people using tailor-made content to make sure there they have an engagement bank like politicians have a vote bank.
I truly believe that my friend has to figure out a lot of challenges, including the business model and revenue model to make his initiative a successful and economically viable one since his path is a rather uncommon one. I wish him all the very best and I am so grateful for his mind and kindness, and the compassion that he holds for society which he is a part of.
