A friend of mine had been in Italy since the pandemic, he came back to India only after about 8-9 months. This evening we went on a drive and I took him to some restaurants in Kochi, there was a light rain and we enjoyed the drive.
We discussed a lot of things, especially how governments and people were collaboratively fighting against the pandemic and how the government of India as well as the state government of Kerala put a great deal of effort into flattening the curve, the new terminology we’ve adopted like social distancing, quarantine, and the methods of prevention like masks and sanitizers.
We also discussed the differences in the entertainment industries of Europe and India. Meanwhile, he asked me to play some music and I put on one of my Spotify playlists while we talked.
I was slightly hesitant because this guy is a music expert, and I knew that he had formal training in music.
I dropped him back to his hotel in Kochi, and before he got down from the car he said, “Amar, I liked the songs you played, and you know what, most of the songs you played are in raga Kharaharapriya.”
I was aware of this raga though I had not made this connection, and when I checked, it turned out to be true. Kharaharapriya is a beautiful Carnatic raga and there’s a similar raga in Hindustani called Kafi.
That was a great piece of information and today I am expressing my gratitude to my friend who gave me this great insight and the beautiful raga Kharaharapriya which has given me some beautiful musical experiences.
It’s very interesting, you could go over your favorite songs and try to find out the ragas, I am sure there’s a connection that runs through all of them just like this.
