Recently I happened to watch one of the older interviews of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. At the end, the interviewer asked Kalam, “When you look back ,what was the most contented, happiest, satisfactory moment you ever had in your entire life?” He also gave Dr Kalam four options – the launch of PSLV in the early 80s, the success of the Agni Missile in the late 80s, the Pokhran nuclear experiment of the late 90s, or the Presidency of India.
Dr Kalam paused for a while and told the interviewer that all these moments were happy moments though the most contented, fulfilling moment he had was while he was working at the Hyderabad DRDO laboratory. They had developed a material that was very lightweight and strong for the heat shield for Agni.
A medical doctor once asked Dr Kalam, “Sir, there are differently-abled children who use wooden callipers (Leg braces), it is so difficult for them to have conventional wooden callipers which weigh almost 4 kg to carry with both hands, so can we have a different solution with this material?”
Dr Kalam gave permission to use the material for the development of callipers for students, and they were able to reduce the weight of the callipers from 4 kg to 400 g by using this particular material.
There was also a function held at which Dr Kalam handed over the callipers to the children and he says that when those children took the callipers and started walking easily he saw tears in the eyes of the parents who found a sense of comfort and happiness in their children.
That moment was the most satisfactory, most contended moment he ever had in his life, he replied.
Of course, we can remember Dr Kalam for a hundred reasons, for his contributions to the world and to this country. Today I am gratefully remembering the human side of Dr Kalam and his incomparable sense of compassion for his fellow beings on this planet.
