This happened when I was in the second standard, there were a couple of gangs in my class, I belonged to one gang and had a fistfight with the leader of the other gang.
I wanted to bring peace and send an emissary to negotiate with him but he was not willing to do that. I had a discussion with my close friends and asked them, “Guys, what can we do negotiate with him because whenever he comes to class, I see anger on his face, I don’t want to see it there forever.”
I had an idea at last and told my friends I would send him a Christmas greeting card. In those days it was a big deal because we might exchange cards but we never actually sent cards to each other by post. Finally, we figured out his address. However, we didn’t have permission from home to go out to buy stamps. So, my buddy told me “Bro, don’t worry about stamps, I have lots of stamps at home, my father has them.”
I think it was 2-3 days before the Christmas vacation started that I managed to get a card. We wrote a message that said “Surprise” on the cover because we didn’t want him to know who was sending it. We were sure that when he got a Christmas greeting from his opponent, we’d have a peace-making deal.
My friend brought a stamp, we pasted it and posted the. We had a wonderful Christmas vacation and in the New Year we were excited to make a peace deal with the opponent gang, but when this boy entered the class he looked at us and he looked angrier than ever, we didn’t know the reason why.
After the class was done, we saw him going to a teacher with the greeting card we’d sent him in his hand. Soon, the teacher called us to the staff room and said, “Amarnath, the boy is quite angry, we can settle it, you need to pay him two rupees and fifty paise for sending a card without sufficient postage.” We said, “No, ma’am, we pasted the stamps,” and the teacher said, “No, Amarnath, this is a court fee stamp (used for legal documentation).” (My friend had got these stamps from his father who was a government officer.)
So, a couple of weeks back we created a WhatsApp group of that class, and this story popped up.. it was fun! 🙂
Today I was thinking that Christmas is coming, and I am gratefully remembering those friends who made those times fantastic.
