A fundamental factor in our body which brings us the experience of living is our neurons. Whatever we think, do, experience – it is all controlled and made possible through neurons.
They are known to everybody, and recently I happened to have a discussion with a senior of my school who has been doing deep research on them.
He shared an insight about synapses, which are the tiny communication links between neurons. In the human brain there are 100 billion neurons on an average, and each neuron is connected to 1000 to 10000 synapses. In all, there are all about 100 to 1000 trillion synapses in our brain alone.
Each synapse is like a tiny computer, it can load and run different programs, and it can change and adapt in response to different firing patterns. They help us to learn, to remember.
Almost every experience we have, the sense of bliss, hunger, confusion, anger, love, everything, every experience we have on this planet is enabled by these tiny little communication links.
Constant electrochemical reactions and exchanges make us and our system alive. Even though I was aware of neurons in general, the communication links that are the synapses and their role was quite interesting.
I think we should extend our gratitude to these synapses, that are not even visible to our eyes, which makes the experience of life on this planet possible.
