day108 – Timekeeper

December 18, 2020August 4, 2021 by Amarnath

When my watch strap broke, I went to the brand outlet to replace it. They told me at the outlet that they don’t keep spare straps, they take orders in advance, and there was a waiting period of 30 to 40 days because of COVID-19. I wasn’t sure about ordering and waiting for another 30 days, it didn’t seem like a good idea. I called a couple of other outlets of the same brand and they all told me the same story.

I was driving back, wondering how I’d fix it, but it was too far gone, it had to be replaced.

On the way back, I happened to find a small corner shop with watches and I stopped there . There was an old man with lots of watches and clocks around him wearing a watch repair magnifier lens on top of one eye. I asked him, “Do you know how to replace this strap, or do you have an old strap of the same model?” He said, “No, sir, we don’t have any old straps.” I asked him what could be done.

He randomly checked his cupboard, pulled out a strap and asked me, “Do you like this strap?” I said, “Yes, I think it’s a decent strap but I don’t think it can be fixed on my watch, it’s a different pattern and model.” He asked, “Did you like it, is it okay for you?” I said, “Ya, it’s fine.” And he asked me to hold on.

Within 5 to 10 minutes he totally re-engineered the straps, he cut some bits, inserted some sort of mechanical thing inside, did some soldering. In 10 minutes the strap was fixed on my watch and nobody could say that it was another model’s strap, that was the kind of precision and perfection he brought into it. And he just charged me just 5% of the total cost my brand outlet guy actually quoted for the original strap.

That was a cool deal altogether 🙂

Today I am gratefully remembering that wonderful engineer, the timekeeper who fixed my watch….
