Six years back we were doing our very first production in Dubai at Palm Jumeirah where we were using the villa of the famous Emirati businessman Suhail Galadari who is the owner of Khaleej Times.
Suhail’s mother is from Karachi and his father is an Emirati. There were many Pakistanis working in his villa, one of them was Mr. Rafiq, quite an old man, who served us food, refreshments, and so on. I used to talk to them, especially Rafiq, about the lifestyle, politics, the standard of living, the government, law and enforcement in his country, their perspective about India, among other things.
On the last day, when we were packing up, Rafiq came to me and said, “Bhai, if you ever come to Pakistan you should come and visit my home, you will get a bus from the border that will take you to Lahore, and from there you can reach Rawalpindi by train, there’s a famous sweet shop outside of Rawalpindi station, my brother runs that shop, just meet him there and he’ll tell you how to reach my home.” I told him, “Ya, let it happen if God is willing (inshallah)”.
On my social media account, I saw the shooting photos on “memories, 6 years ago” which made me remember Rafiq and all the experiences we had… I am much grateful to his kindness and willingness to embrace his neighbour even over the borders which are made by man.
