day78 – Mirror neurons

November 18, 2020August 5, 2021 by Amarnath

The human brain is the most evolved organ on this planet and we know that neurons in the brain make us who we are. Within neurons, there is a particular set of neurons called “mirror neurons” which are said to play a role in the development of humane qualities in us compared to other primates and species.

One of the profound qualities of human beings is our empathy, compassion, love, and self-awareness – mirror neurons are believed to play a crucial role in all of these. Mirror neurons fire both when we perform an action and when we observe that action being done by someone else. When we watch movies in a romantic scene, when the hero and heroine express their love on the screen, we too feel a sense of romance overflowing from our heart because of mirror neurons.

When you see someone being brutal towards a person or an animal, or someone being seriously injured in a movie or in real life, you experience the same pain and you may even close your eyes with your hands to avoid looking at it. Mirror neurons make those visuals and other people’s experiences personal to us – all those human qualities that lie beyond the reptilian part of the brain.

We possibly experience the whole world in a humane manner because of the larger amount of mirror neurons in our brain compared to other primates and other species on this planet.
So let me express my gratitude to the mirror neurons in you and in me, which makes us who we are today as human beings.
