I happened to hear the most swear words and be called by the most swear words during my college years, especially the first year of engineering.
Ragging was widespread in the college, the first year students were treated like slaves by the seniors, it was the custom there. The seniors would call us only using swear words. Initially it was hurtful, if we examined the meaning of each word it was heartbreaking.
After months it became normal. Once we completed the first year these and other words we that we had picked up in our day to day lives had become familiar to us and we kept using them while we were in college. After I left college, I consciously avoided using swear words and almost totally took them out of my vocabulary.
Scientific studies say that people who use swear words build good friendships and relationships between people. I found that interesting. If you think about it, the people around whom you can swear and people who swear back – that kind of freedom exists only in great friendships.
A one-sided swearing is a kind of slavery, that’s not beautiful, but if you are free to swear at someone and if that person also has the right to swear back at, then that’s a perfectly healthy, wonderful, beautiful relationship.
So, today I am gratefully remembering those friends around whom I use swear words and who have the silent approval to swear back at me as well 🙂
