Today was quite a busy day and it was only by 3:30 that I happened to find a restaurant to have my lunch. It was a Tamil vegetarian restaurant. I asked for meals but they said they were out of those and advised me to have the tiffin. I know the guy, and asked him what that included. He said white rice, rasam, pappadam, pickle, curd and beans thoran. I said that’s fine and he served me a wonderful lunch in that restaurant.
I have always been amazed by the magic of rasam, it’s a wonderful kind of soup dish. If you have a good rasam then you can have a wonderful meal with just a pappadam, a thoran, and a pickle. It also has great medicinal properties, since it’s made with tamarind, turmeric, tomato, chili pepper, cumin, garlic, black pepper, black mustard, curry leaves, coriander leaves, and lots of other ingredients. It’s a home remedy for common colds, especially for South Indians.
When we were children our elders would make rasam for us to cure common colds and fevers.
Rasam has many magical properties – it reduces blood sugar levels so it can be served to all kind of patients including diabetic patients, it can be used as a treatment for anemia, it is a wonderful antioxidant, it helps the body attack free radicals, prevents constipation – it’s a total package altogether, especially to build immunity in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
I don’t know the magician who created this magical formula that has such great taste and greater medicinal effects. Let’s try to include rasam in our diet especially during this time.
Today I am lovingly and gratefully remembering this wonderful dish – rasam.
