We experience the world through our senses, our capacity to see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. Each of our sensory organs has a broad spectrum of receptivity.
There is a Zen practice in which you pay attention to your environment by concentrating on very minute things with your senses, and it’s a beautiful experience of life. For example, using the sense of touch when we hold a phone, use a laptop, write something, or when we hold a glass of water – we experience that touch, but we can experience that touch in a more profound way. When you touch what you’re wearing, if you pay deep attention you can feel the texture of that cloth. It is the same when you touch the petals of a flower, that kind of intense attention makes us capable of experiencing the extraordinary capacity of our sense of touch.
Similarly, when we eat something, try to smell it, try to extract different fragrant elements from the food. We can consciously chew it slowly and experience the explosion of taste on our taste buds, and if we try to defragment each different taste, its intensity is a new experience.
When you look at something, maybe a leaf, understand the perfection of design at the micro-level, look at its back. Just like our fingerprints, the back of every leaf is unique. Look at it and understand the ultimate sophistication of its design.
When it comes to hearing, sit somewhere and listen to the sound of your body. If you are in a silent place you can hear the sounds inside your body. Try to listen to the faint sounds around you too, it could be a song being played somewhere, the chirping of birds, it could be anything. Listen to the faintest sounds possible and experience the broad capacity of your sense of hearing.
So today let’s give more attention to the micro, the small things by which we experience the world around us and let’s be grateful to the small particles that make possible the manifestation of the larger physical and sensual experiences we have in life on this planet.
