About 3 months ago one of my friends happened to throw a steel bottle of water to me. I missed the catch and it fell right on my thumb, I was holding a laptop and my thumb got slightly crushed between the laptop and the steel water bottle.
The severe pain continued for a couple of days and I went to a hospital and consulted a doctor. He took an x-ray of the thumb and he told me that there’s no serious injury or fracture. But the pain continued. It was painful to use my thumb on the fingerprint to unlock the cellphone, while swiping to check WhatsApp notifications, while pressing the lock of a door, while turning on the ignition of the car. Wherever it touched, it was painful – buttoning up a shirt was painful, the process of wearing jeans was painful, so was unplugging the charger, or taking the meat off a piece of a chicken. Applying holy ash on the forehead from the Shiva temple, even that was painful!
Of course, we know the story of Ekalavya and Dronacharya and heard about the significance of thumb but I experienced it only when I went through this turmoil. In science and management studies there’s something called the Thumb Rule, something which can be broadly applied and which works is called a Thumb Rule. The thumb is something which is significant, which applies to all walks of life.
It’s been 4 months, my thumb is completely healed now, and my routines are quite easy again. Today I am gratefully remembering my thumb with lots of love and respect for making my life an easy one.
