Some things, we don’t forget them. When I was in college I had a notebook for Data Structures, and there was a quote on the notebook cover that said “Today is the Sum Of all Yesterdays.” I personally loved that quote, and even after that semester, I used to write it down in all of my notebooks.
Later, I repeated this quote often in many places while engaging with different people. The whole idea of it is that we acknowledge the undeniable reality that we are living in this moment, we can breathe, we see things, we experience our cognitive functions, we perceive the world through our senses, we have perspective, we have a body, we are alive, we have a mind, intellect and discernment…
We are the sum of all the yesterdays in our lives, we did not just come into existence this morning. We are a collection, an accumulation, of the years we have been on this planet, our past moments and days! Nevertheless, whatever colours or tone they might be, our yesterdays make us who we are today – we might have won, might have lost, we were happy, we experienced sorrows, we cheerfully celebrated with our friends, we might have lived in solitude, we chilled in the spring and we sweated in the hot summer.
Our yesterdays make us strong, bring meaning to our life, they collectively create our today, this moment, this reality, and I am repeating the quote again – “Today is the Sum Of all Yesterdays.”
I am thankfully remembering all my yesterdays, the fallen leaves, with gratitude and love.
